[WAA-Sampler]

TL;DR: get some, you can thank me later. I have heard of Wayaround before, but thought it was another QR or barcode scheme. It is most definitely not! When I realized it used NFC for its label recognition, and not the camera, I picked up the sampler pack from AT Guys to try it out. I must say I am impressed! The tags are well made. The intended use case for everything but the clip was obvious, although once I finally realized what they mean by "clip", that was obvious also. (It's clip as in paperclip, not clip as in clothespin. I'm a little embarrassed that it took the FAQ on their website to light the bulb on that one for me.) But that's not why I was impressed. I was impressed by the speed! I am so used to using Digit-Eyes, or Seeing AI, or various QR and barcode scanners. Even when their fast, their slow, unless you happen to get the camera over the code first time by accident. But this... Hold the phone top edge very near, or touch it against, the tag, and boom--it's recognized within less than a second. Sometimes it takes a couple extra seconds to speak the label contents, but that's probably because of a cloud transaction and they may decide to improve that later. I went around to all of the cans in my pantry, and painstakingly used Seeing AI to barcode scan or short-text-read each of them, to identify them all. Then I slapped the little magnetic squares on the top of each that would take magnets, and created a grocery type label for each of them. Next time, it will take far less time to distinguish the evaporated milk from the Ro-Tel hot tomatoes. :) For the cans that wouldn't take magnets, I used Velcro wire-ties that i had a hundred or so of (Around $5 on Amazon), and ran them around the can, and attached one of the clip style labels. I did the same for the bottle of milk I had--not because I might not know what it was, but so I could fill the expiration date into the grocery label's "best by date" field. They have very thoughtfully made the different label types (which is just something you assign in the app, it can be changed easily), able to include relevant extra pieces of data that you might want to record. The app is, of course, fully accessible. It may even be a little too verbose with its hints, but there is an option to help with that a bit. In summary: I am looking forward to using these on more things, such as files, boxes, those large plastic totes I have full of parts and such in the garage, and much more. If you're blind and use a smartphone, you should seriously consider getting in to the wayaround system--I don't think you'll regret it for a moment!
